Louis Fyne and Miss Rollings in the Film True Stories :: essays research papers

True Stories is not a movie of a town but yet a movie of people that just happen to live in this little town called Virgil, Texas. True Stories had a lot of unique and bizarre characters that each represents a characteristic of a typical American. There were two main characters, in my opinion, which stuck out from all the others. Louis Fyne who represents the common man, and the very lazy Miss Rollings who represents a very typical yet sad American feature, materialism. Louis is a working man who is not necessarily a physical specimen and is getting ready to settle down. Problem is he has not found any one to love. Miss Rollings, on the other hand, is a very wealthy, attractive but aging woman. She doesn’t know it in the beginning of the movie but she is not content as being the lazy women she is. She also is looking for love. Even though these characters are very different at first glance, they have one common interest, which is loneliness. Miss Rollings does not realize that she is lonely until she sees Louis’ performance. Louis’ and Miss Rollings’ search for fulfillment all comes together at the end of the movie for a nice typical American ending, happily ever after. These two characters might have been the main characters but were by far not the only ones that represent a typical American feature. The search for significance and meaning is another American trait in this movie. The cute woman, for example, can not comprehend sadness. Therefore she chooses to ignore all sadness while focusing on all things cute. Then there is the Lying Woman, who personally is my favorite character in the movie. She is apparently dissatisfied with the actuality of her life. She decides to â€Å"improve† her life by telling lies to all that will listen. She creates a whole other personality that is rich and vivid but still false. If you are thinking that there can not be possibly any more American traits in this movie you are wrong. The love for business can also be represented in this movie by the owner of Varicorp, Earl. His love for overall work and business can display what is known as corporate obsession in today’s America. The scene at the dinner table where Earl uses food and china to describe what is yet to come of Virgil and Varicorp displays this obsession.

In my opinion the generic HR strategy most appropriate to align with Alkermes corporate strategy, is the resource-based view (RBV) model.The RBV model works towards identifying the firm’s potential key resources and developing and manipulating them to build a value-creating strategy. When Alkermes decided to merge with Elan one of their main reasons for doing so was that they could use Elan’s most valuable resource, the Elan drug technologies (EDT) unit. The EDT develops proprietary drug technologies that can be applied to a number of products, improving the effectiveness of the drugs. With Alkermes now having obtained a technological resource with a rarity that will help them gain a competitive advantage over their rivals, they must now focus on their human resources.They look to acquire talented employees who show initiative and feel good about improving people’s health. Combing and developing these resources will help them build a strong RBV model. Whe n Alkermes employees are asked what is the main objective of the organization the reply should always be, â€Å"Excellence in everything we do†. They pursue this excellence because they know they are working towards improving the wellbeing of other people. Most importantly they want to manage performance so that all processes are carried out in the most successful way. RBV shows that people are strategically important to a firm’s success and that they are a potential source of sustainable competitive advantage.Alkermes have o btained a rare and valuable organizational capital in the form of the EDT unit; they now must match this with a highly skilled human capital that will get the best out of this technological resource. RBV focuses more on the HR pool, i. e. the employees than on the actual HR practice, so employees should have both a high level of skills and a willingness to achieve. Creating a good HR pool can be hard to imitate by competitors, so it can create a competitive advantage. High pay is always a major pull in attracting the best employees, as is perks, i. . company car and health benefits, as is bonus and new job opportunities for good work. Yet, Alkermes states that their commitments are ultimately towards the wellbeing of the patients that use their products. This will attract employees who feel they have a morale obligation to help people in need. This is an example of attracting potential employees using a non-monetary policy. When trying to create a performance management policy for a n organization you have to look at all the types of capital that affect performance, i. . human, social and organizational capital. RBV looks to integrate all the capital resources of an organization to create the most suited HR policy. Alkermes have already greatly improved their social and organizational capital by merging with Elan and using the EDT unit respectively. Now Alkermes have to look at managing the performance of their human capital. When trying to collect data on performance you cannot completely rely on employee reports via surveys about how they feel the HR strategy is working.You have to collect more quantative data. Collect data on things such as production per hour rate and job turnover rate, this will give you a more in depth idea as to how employees are preforming. You can now use this information to decide on what reward and training systems to put in place to improve performance. Communication must be both upward and downward in an organization to discover ho w employees are performing. It will give you an idea on what employees want and if they are best suited to the post they are in.Good performance management will result in higher operating performance, which will translate into increased profitability. Reward management is concerned with the implementation of strategies and policies that aim to reward people fairly, equally and consistently in accordance with their value to the organization. The objectives of reward management are to recruit and retain, motivate employees and to strengthen psychological contracts. They can be both monetary (bonuses) and non-monetary (esteem, i. e. job title).RBV looks at obtaining and holding onto the best possible employees, and the best way to retain them is through a strong reward system. Overall I believe that if Alkermes adopt the RBV approach and combine all of their resources by carrying out the objectives entailed they should be able to achieve their cooperate strategy. I feel that the inform ation presented in this report is a good guideline as to how they should carry out their objectives. Brutus Character Analysis in Shakespeares Tragedy of...

Character Analysis: Brutus William Shakespeares play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, was mainly based on the assassination of Julius Caesar. The character who was the mastermind behind the assassination was, ironically, Marcus Brutus, a senator and close friend to Julius Caesar. But what would cause a person to kill a close friend? After I examined Brutus relationship towards Caesar, his involvement in the conspiracy and his importance to the plot it all became clear. Brutus had one particular reason for killing Caesar and that was for the good of the people and the republic. Brutus had no personal reason for killing Caesar. Brutus declares to himself that his role in the conspiracy is to save Rome. He says to the people that, If then that friend demands why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.(Act 3, scene 2, lines 19-21). If Brutus was not in the plot of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, the whole plot wouldve fallen apart. This satire fiercely describes just how far a television network will go to achieve such accomplishments. As a follow up, I’d like to discuss cover letters. Here’s my basic philosophy on them: don’t bother. It’s redundant, harder to read than the resume, and provides no additional insight. The form letter: This says, essentially, â€Å"Dear Sir or Madam: I saw your ad in the paper and thought you might like me. † And it’s clearly a form letter where maybe they got my name and company right. If they’re lucky, I will still take the time to read their resume after being insulted with a form letter. The â€Å"I’m crazy†: This one’s rare, and it expands on the resume of experience with some personal insights. Examples range from the merely batty (â€Å"I find batik as an art form has taught me to become both a better person and project manager. ) to the truly terrifying (â€Å"I cast a pentagram hex and the central line pointed towards your job listing. I know you will find this as comforting as I do. â€Å") There are really only a few times to use a cover letter: 1. When you know the name of the person hiring 2. When you know something about the job requirement 3. When you’ve been personally referred (which might include 1 and 2) Under those conditions, you can help your cause by doing some of the resume analysis for your potential new boss. To illustrate, here’s the best cover letter I ever received: Dear David: I am writing in response to the opening for xxxx, which I believe may report to you. I can offer you seven years of experience managing communications for top-tier xxxx firms, excellent project-management skills, and a great eye for detail, all of which should make me an ideal candidate for this opening. It sums up the resume as it relates to the job. It asks for the job. The writer of this letter took the time to think through what would be relevant to me. Instead of scattering lots of facts in hopes that one was relevant, the candidate offered up an opinion as to which experiences I should focus on. And that means the writer isn’t just showing me skills related to the job, he’s showing me he’ll be the kind of employee who offers up solutions — instead of just laying problems on my desk. Hence, drawing inspiration from the thought leaders helps them to focus more strongly on their goals (Wellner, 2015) Information sharing, knowledge and expertise with other team members will make them feel trustworthy, confident and at the same time able to learn. Learning is a continuous process; hence, this will help them in immense learning. Another useful aspect of learning is, it helps in identifying the skill set one requires to have for fulfilment of his individual goals, and also try and understand the viewpoint of the leaders or the managers in the company. Testing and challenging idea is a part of B-testing, it helps to identify the gaps or lacunae in the ideas or the process, hence, extremely important to test and challenge the ideas. Another advantage is, it helps to improvise the idea. Discussing ideas gives more clarity on a particular idea or a topic, and helps to brainstorm further. The first step to innovation is keeping your mind open and discuss endlessly, working in a coherent atmosphere provides breeding ground for more innovation and better learning (Li, 2013) The team has really come together after implementing the new ideas and clear cut objectives laid down for them, debrief has helped them immensely in understanding the requirement of the organization and the managers. Reflection on activities helps to understand and measure the process. Its very important to look for inspiration from outside; it helps in learning about the fault and also provides a great insight on the quality of work or the idea. The opinion is non-biased and hence a better platform to learn. The clear cut benefits of discussing the challenges of being innovative in a constructive manner is important, as it helps to ascertain the difficulty in the road ahead, it helps team to have a fair understanding of the challenges, and also gives them a sense of responsibility that they are working towards something radical and something which has not been there in the first place, it provides a sense of accomplishment (Yeh Walter, 2017) As answered in the earlier questions, taking ideas for improvement helps big time in identifying the future challenges, which can help in building long term or futuristic strategy and in turn helps the team to pick the lead and work. This helps in stopping the process of reinventing the wheel every time. Innovation is a term which has hugely become popular in the last decade or so, hence celebrating it is important in order to create a community and also set examples for other. Successful innovation motivates other that nothing is impossible, with the team work, right direction and a determination to do something new, innovation can be achieved.
